I am a freelance piano/theory teacher and media composer/songwriter established in the Bristol area, since moving from Dublin about ten years ago. I have performed and written all my life and am always looking to share my passion for music with others, either through teaching or playing in ensembles. I studied the piano for 15 years in the Royal Irish Academy of Music, achieving a highly proficient level beyond Grade 8, and am self-taught on the bass guitar, having played in numerous bands (including my own) for over 10 years. I have studied music composition and technology at two highly respected universities and my range of interest is vast, having always worked in the industry.
I am also very willing to teach composition to any interested or budding writers! My Masters course in media composition covered all the ins and outs of professional film and TV work so I am full of industry secrets!
I have worked with students of all ages (from 8 to 80), and collaborated with other musicians most of my life, either through private lessons, choirs, bands, or other ensembles. Through my wide range of experience, knowledge and collective working, I feel I can approach any teaching situation with vitality and valuable understanding. I have also guided students through ABRSM exams up to Grade 8 and further with great results.
My opinion is that it is highly important to nurture a child’s interest from a young age, speaking from personal experience.. I was lucky to have some fantastic, highly regarded piano teachers who truly encouraged me, and I hope that I can pass the same exuberance I felt onto others. I am happy to teach most styles and standards, having a varied background of many musical interests and work to draw from. This includes solo performance, bands, classical and contemporary ensembles, studio work, choral singing and musical theatre.
